Hindustani music is the classical music tradition of North India. It can be traced back to distinctive musical practices from the 8th and 9th centuries AD. By the 12th and 13th centuries, waves of invaders from West and Central Asia brought their musical cultures to North India. The present form of Hindustani music thus represents a confluence of Islamic musical values with indigenous Indian practices.
